Sheet Bend
A bend is used to attach two ropes together, usually in order to lengthen them.
The sheet bend is the most common bend because it is reliable, easy to tie and can be used in almost every situation.
To tie a sheet bend, follow the diagram below:
Make a U in the working end of one of the ropes. If the ropes are of different thickness, this needs to be in the thicker of the two.
Pass the working end of the second rope up inside the U, lead it around the back of the first rope and across the front tucking it under the standing part of the second rope.
Notice the working ends of both ropes end up on the same side of the knot. The knot can be tied passing the second rope around the wrong way resulting in the ends on opposite sides which is not as reliable.
