Prolong Knot

Prolong Knot Photo

The Prolong Knot was named such because of the way it can be lengthened by continuing the plat. It is possible to create a knot of any length by increasing the number of bights.

The width of the knot can only be altered by the number of times the knot ply is increased and the thickness of the rope.

This picture shows a 4-ply tied in 8mm diameter rope, which finishes up about 17 cm wide and 38 cm long. It requires 12 m of rope.

If you need some suitable rope, just visit our online rope store at www.nauticalrope.co.uk where you can also buy the finished decorative rope work if you do not have time to learn to tie your own right now.

To tie a prolong knot, follow the diagrams below:

The excess length of rope required at the working ends to form the full knot has been removed from the diagrams for clarity. As the knot is formed, to maintain it’s shape work more slack through the knot structure as required.

If the knot is to have triple or more ply, keep the initial structure very loose as it is easier to tighten a loose knot than loosen one that has become too tight.

The diagrams show a completed stage of the knot in blue and the next development action in red. Each subsequent diagram shows the previous action completed in blue so if you are not sure what the red arrows are indicating, look at the next diagram for the required result.

Step 2:

Work slack into the knot and draw down the loops shown.

Step 3:

Twist the outside edge of the left loop over the top.

Step 4:

Twist the outside edge of the right loop underneath it’s other side but over the top of the left loop.

Step 5:

Take the right hand working end and lead it: over - under - under - over.

Step 6:

To finish the knot at this length, take both working ends and lead them: under - over -under, so they end up underneath in the center of the knot away from the edge.

At this point one of the working ends can continue to be lead following on from the other working end to add a second (and then third etc) ply to the knot.

To lengthen the knot, do not lead the bottom working end back into the knot as above, leave it to the left side.

Continue the lead of the left hand working end: under - over - under, so it is emerging from under the right hand bottom bight.

The bottom of the knot will then look very similar to the knot in Step 2, only with more bights above it. Simply repeat steps 2-6 until the required length is reached.
